How Many Different Choreographers' Routines Do You Need To Be Able To Do?
There is no set number of different choreographers' routines that you need to learn from. What you will find though is that the more choreographers you can learn from the better you will be prepared for a dance career.
If you learn from just one teacher, you will only learn routines in the style of that one teacher. So if you learn something totally different to your teacher's style you will have to adapt very quickly.
However if you have experience of working with lots of different choreographers and teachers beforehand then you will have been exposed to lots of different styles, so are unlikely to be in for a complete surprise at a dance audition.
Many times when you audition, you will learn a routine from a choreographer you have never worked with or whose work you may never have seen. If you've learnt from lots of different teachers in the past, then the chances are good that from all the different styles you've practised that you will be able to find moves in the routine similar to those you know.
This is because although the dance routines of different choreographers look different and they all have their own ideas, they do have similar educations in that wherever they learned dance certain steps and moves would have been covered.
If you're looking to become a professional dancer it will be more important to learn from different choreographers than if you're not. If you just want to learn routines for fun, go for routines that you like.
If you want to be a pro, it can be useful to learn routines you may not voluntarily choose to learn but are different so if you ever have to learn it as a job, you won't be too alarmed at the task!
Also remember that different dance teachers and choreographers have different teaching styles. Some use counts, some prefer to use beats or lyrics.
Some like to teach quick, some like to teach slower. It's also good to learn from different people so that you can get used to different teaching methods as well.
