Why Do Routines Seem So Hard To Pick Up?
When you start learning dance routines they may seem very hard to pick up. Moves to remember, the order of the moves to remember, when to do them in the music and more.
To learn this amount of stuff in a fairly short period of time can be quite tough when you're new to dance.
However it does become easier. One of the main reasons for this is your muscle memory begins to take over. After doing moves a certain number of times, your body knows what it is doing and no longer has to think about it.
So that same move you were fretting about not too long ago will actually become natural and available to you without even thinking in a few months time.
Once you know how to do the moves it's one less thing to worry about, you now just need to remember other things like the order in which the moves come.
Things such as timing are things you also learn in your mind and in your body. After doing lots of routines, your body will become accustomed to new rhythms whereas when you started out it could probably only do basic rhythms.
The mind too the more it becomes exposed to these different rhythms, the more it can keep a strong rhythm in check.
So all these processes which take place and allow learning to become more natural, are activated by practise. For some people it may take more time before a certain move becomes stuck in their muscle memory, for others it may be quicker.
However the more you do it, the easier it becomes. What is hard to you now, in a year's time may not be so hard.
It's just the sense of perpsective you have right now as you are focussing on the difficulties. Focus on making progress and you will see it start to come to you easier and easier over time with well executed practise.
